The Advantages of Diesel Vehicles Over Electric Cars

If you want a more environmentally friendly solution for your driving, the answer is not always an electric vehicle. Diesel vehicles are more energy-efficient than traditional gas cars and have some advantages over existing electric cars. That does not mean that electric cars may not be the way of the future, but currently, you may have other options.

Diesel Vehicles Are Less Costly to Create

This does not refer to dollar cost (though this is also true) but rather environmental cost. The creation of an electric vehicle is actually less environmentally friendly than the creation of a diesel vehicle. Electric vehicles, due to their complex batteries, actually have a higher carbon footprint when first created.

That does not mean they have a larger carbon footprint over time. That depends almost entirely on how the vehicle is used. A sparingly used diesel vehicle will have less of a carbon footprint than an electric vehicle used very frequently and needs a battery replacement. And, of course, used vehicles are better than either option from a strictly environmental standpoint.

Electric Vehicles Are Still Extremely Expensive

If you purchase cars for a fleet, this matters. Electric vehicles are expensive compared to diesel vehicles, which are, in turn, less expensive than traditional gas cars. That isn't just in terms of the purchase price, but also the maintenance. Electric vehicles may have costly battery changes (depending on the vehicle itself). Diesel engines are simple and easy to maintain.

These costs may go down in the future, and some tax deductions are provided for electric vehicles - so it may depend on when you make your purchases.

Diesel Vehicles Are More Powerful

If your vehicles need to do any towing or need to be able to perform in difficult environments, you may want to consider a diesel. Diesel engines have more horsepower and torque than equivalent electric vehicle engines.

While electric vehicles have become more powerful, they still are not quite as powerful as other types of vehicles. For residential driving, this may not be a large issue. For commercial driving, having an insufficiently powered vehicle could be ineffective at best and dangerous at worst.

Electric Vehicle Batteries Are Still Evolving

While some batteries are able to be recycled, some people still have concerns about how batteries are disposed of. Electric vehicle batteries contain chemicals that can be toxic and dangerous, and the more electric vehicles are on the road, the more this can become a problem.

Comparatively, some diesel vehicles have been fit to take advantage of vegetable oil and other waste oil, rather than crude oil. Diesel vehicles have the ability to be incredibly sustainable for that reason: they can use almost anything to power themselves, and this usage does not require any additional waste.

Both Vehicles Ultimately Get Their Electricity from the Same Source

Electric vehicles get their energy from the grid. Grid power could be from anything - even coal . While electric vehicles are more efficient than diesel cars or gas-powered cars, keep in mind that ultimately they get their energy from the same source: fossil fuels.

Until alternative energy sources are widespread, electric vehicles will get their energy from fossil fuels, which is something to keep in mind.

Diesel vehicles are affordable, powerful, and energy-friendly. Though electric vehicles are likely to be refined in the future, diesel vehicles might be the better option for the foreseeable future. But ultimately, diesel vehicles and electric vehicles are both usually powered by oil, such as the oil provided by Biltmore Oil. Call us for your oil needs today.
